At Selfridge & Co.
This was a day to relax, unwind, and prepare for tomorrow’s
trip to Prague. We walked the sidewalks
of this historic city, where four of us met at world-famous Selfridge & Co., claimed by
many to be the world’s largest department store. You might have seen the TV series detailing the history of Mr.Selfridge and the growth of his little store. After reminding the ladies that the suitcases
and carry-ons were full, with no room for extras, we roamed the store before
meeting for a sidewalk pub lunch. One of
us roamed over to the food hall, where there happened to be an ice cream
counter with the most delicious Black Forest ice cream you can imagine. The cherries were the perfect complement to the
deep chocolate flavor; it was like going through a scoop of chocolate covered
cherries in a bowl of cream. Or so the
person who tried it claimed, to himself, as no one was around to share this
information.
Pub with a few flowers more than most
London street scenes
We did some more roaming in the
afternoon, soaking up the beauty and history; we’ve shared above some of the
street scenes so you can get a taste of it as well.
In the evening it was time to
celebrate the 25th wedding anniversary of James and Jeanne Marie, so
we first went to the historic and posh Palm Court at the Langham Hotel for
refreshments. Then we taxied over to
Rules Restaurant, a huge, well-appointed pub established in 1798, where the walls are
covered with racks of various animals, photos and memorabilia of all kinds. London’s oldest restaurant, Rules has been
owned by only three families in its 226-year history, and the current family runs a
first class establishment. It was a
great last night for the London portion of our trip. Tomorrow is a transit day, as we head for
Prague, so if we don’t report tomorrow, you may assume we have been lost in
transit.
